Solomon Feferman Categorical Foundations and Foundations of Category Theory*

چکیده

This paper is divided'into two parts. Part I deals briefly with the thesis that category theory (or something like it) should provide the proper foundations of mathematics, in preference to current foundational schemes. An opposite view is argued here on the grounds that the notions of operation and collection are prior to all structural notions. However, no position is taken as to whether such are to be conceived extensionally or intensionally. Part II describes work by the author on a new non-extensional type-free theory t of operations and classifications. 1 Its interest in the present connection is that much of 'naive' or 'unrestricted' category theory can be given a direct account within t. This work illustrates requirements and possibilities for a foundation of unrestricted category theory.

Enriched Stratified systems for the Foundations of Category Theory

Four requirements are suggested for an axiomatic system S to provide the foundations of category theory: (R1) S should allow us to construct the category of all structures of a given kind (without restriction), such as the category of all groups and the category of all categories; (R2) It should also allow us to construct the category of all functors between any two given categories including t...

POWERSET OPERATOR FOUNDATIONS FOR CATALG FUZZY SET THEORIES

The paper sets forth in detail categorically-algebraic or catalg foundations for the operations of taking the image and preimage of (fuzzy) sets called forward and backward powerset operators. Motivated by an open question of S. E. Rodabaugh, we construct a monad on the category of sets, the algebras of which generate the fixed-basis forward powerset operator of L. A. Zadeh. On the next step, w...

Why a Little Bit Goes a Long Way: Logical Foundations of Scientifically Applicable Mathematics 1

We have good reason to believe our best scientific theories, and mathematical entities are indispensable to those theories, so we have good reason to believe in mathematical entities. Mathematics is thus on an ontological par with natural science. Furthermore, the evidence that confirms scientific theories also confirms the required mathematics, so mathematics and science are on an epistemologi...

The development of programs for the foundations of mathematics in the first third of the 20th century

The most prominent “schools” or programs for the foundations of mathematics that took shape in the first third of the 20th century emerged directly from, or in response to, developments in mathematics and logic in the latter part of the 19th century. The first of these programs, so-called logicism, had as its aim the reduction of mathematics to purely logical principles. In order to understand ...

Towards categorical cryptography

Cryptography is a theory of secret functions. Category theory is a general theory of functions. Cryptography has reached the stage where its structures often take several pages to define, and even its formulas sometime run from page to page. Category theory has some complicated definitions as well, but one of its specialties is taming the flood of structure by diagrams and layering. Cryptograph...
